The Kingman Public Library is planning an interactive local multi-author panel including myself, fantasy author Alexandra Livingston, as well as Kabam 2012 Featured Author Michael Esser (as well as others) on March 21st at 6pm. Come out and ask the questions that can't be answered anywhere else! How does one get published? What's the hardest part of writing a novel length story? Come out and join us!

Maxwell Alexander Drake's New Book!

One of KABAM's 2012 Featured Author's Maxwell Alexander Drake will be coming out with his third novel in his Oblivion Saga titled Dreams and Nightmares in either April or May this year, just in time for KABAM! Both the first book of this series Farmers and Mercenaries as well as the second Mortals and Deities have won the Moonbeam Young Adult Fantasy Award for 2009 and 2011 respectively. KABAM receives $100 donation from Janet and Gary Watson

Kingman City Councilwoman Janet Watson and her husband, Mohave County District 1 Supervisor Gary Watson have donated $100 to support KABAM's use of Metcalfe Park in Kingman.

Janet Watson, a former teacher with Palo Christi and Manazanita Elementary Schools in Kingman, is an active member of the Kingman Friends of the Library, and remembers reading to her daughter every night. Recently while standing in Mohave County Library - Kingman, carrying a book she had just checked out, she stated she was an avid supporter of KABAM! and literacy. Ms. Watson indicated that her attendance at KABAM! Fest 2011 had been enjoyable and was looking forward to this year's event as well.

Officers and Duties

1. Chair: The Steering Committee Chair will provide direction to the Committee, schedule and conduct Steering Committee and Executive Committee Meetings, represent the Committee in any capacity necessary, ensure that sub-committees are established and functioning, ensure that regular reports are provided to the MLA Board, and vote on all matters of business.

2. Vice-Chair: The Steering Committee Vice-Chair will perform the duties of the Chair in his/her absence, work for the overall success of KABAM, and vote on all matters of business.

3. Treasurer: The Steering Committee Treasurer will maintain accurate and timely records of all matters pertaining to the finances of the KABAM Fest!, ensure that deposits are made and bills paid in a timely manner, report to the Steering Committee at each of its meetings, work for the overall success of KABAM, and vote on all matters of business.

4. Secretary: The Steering Committee Secretary will record accurate and useful minutes of each Committee Meeting and provide them for formal approval in a timely manner, work for the overall success of KABAM, and vote on all matters of business.

5. Member-at-Large: The Steering Committee Member-at-Large will perform any duties necessary for the good of KABAM, and vote on all matters of business.

The Steering Committee of the Kingman Area Books are Magic Festival (KABAM!) is currently seeking nominations for 2011-2012 officers to serve on our Executive Committee. The next KABAM! Festival is scheduled for May 19, 2012, but planning has already begun!

Executive Committee positions to be filled include Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary And Member-at-Large. Executive Committee meetings to plan the 2012 Festival are held on an approximately monthly basis.

If you or someone you know are willing serve in any of these positions, (or if you would like to get involved in KABAM in some other capacity)--please contact me by phone or email to indicate your interest, and in which position.

Elections for these Executive Committee positions will be held by email-ballot beginning September 21, 2011. KABAM! is a great opportunity to be involved in our community!

I express a deep and sincere thank you to the many, many staff members who helped in a myriad of ways toward what culminated as a VERY successful KABAM Fest! The helpers were many, from Steering Committee members who began working on this year's event 11 months ago; to the various subcommittee members who have held numerous "in-between" meetings; to volunteers who helped set-up and take-down; to staff who re-arranged their work schedules in order to be at the park all day Saturday; to staff who covered the libraries so that staff could be at the park all day Saturday; to staff who came as visitors/patrons of the festival. The list of individuals, groups, branches/divisions, etc. would be too long to try and list them all here...but please know that I know, more than ever, that this truly is a team effort (along with numerous individuals, groups, businesses and organizations in the community) that makes it happen.

By the way, the Saturday event in the park had over 2,100 visitors - by far a new record for KABAM. I don't yet know how many hundreds of additional kids and adults were directly impacted by author visits and presentations before Saturday. Not to mention the about 100 or so that attended the Poetry Slam in downtown Kingman Thursday evening.

Kingman poet Becky Hayes wins KABAM SLAM III

Kingman poet Becky Hayes wins the KABAM Slam trophy, bragging rights, and approximately $132 in cash.

On May 13, KABAM SLAM III held three rounds of competition among young poets from not only Kingman but also Seligman and the Bullhead City area. After the third round, Becky's cumulative score was the highest among all poets competing in front of an audience of over 100 spectators.

In addition to the competition, KABAM SLAM III featured live dance and musical performances, as well as live poetry performances by Aaron Johnson, Ryan Brown, and Los Angeles poet Ellyn Maybe.

Aaron Johnson is a 5 national slam competitor. A leader in the phoenix poetry scene, Johnson was one of the founders of the Northern Arizona Poetry Association, NORAZ, which not only promotes adult poets but has been associated with numerous programs around the state promoting literacy and poetry in schools. A veteran of several cross country tours, Johnson is the author of 3 chapbooks and a founder of Spoken Circus, a music group.

Ellyn Maybe has performed her poetry all over the country, including Bumbershoot,the Poetry Project, the New School, Taos Poetry Circus, South by Southwest, Lollapalooza, Albuquerque Poetry Festival and Seattle Poetry Festival. She has also read in Europe at the Bristol Poetry Festival, on the BBC, and in poetry slams and readings in Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart. She opened the MTV Spoken Wurd Tour in Los Angeles. In addition, she has also read at USC, UCLA, CSUN and Cal State Fullerton, among other colleges.

Writer’s Digest named her one of ten poets to watch in the new millennium. Her work has been included in many anthologies, including Word Warriors: 35 Women Leaders in the Spoken Word Revolution, Poetry Slam, Another City: Writing From Los Angeles, Poetry Nation, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry and American Poetry: The Next Generation. She was on the 1998 and 1999 Venice Beach Slam teams. She was seen reading her work in Michael Radford’s (Il Postino) film Dancing at the Blue Iguana.

KABAM Receives Grant from Arizona Commisison on the Arts

Despite reduced funding for the upcoming year, the Arizona Commission on the Arts has awarded KABAM a grant of approximately $1764 to help to support our 2010 Festival. These funds will help pay for author travel expenses and other costs of putting on the Festival

Kingman Mayor John Salem (front, left) signed a proclamation Tuesday at Manzanita Elementary declaring May 16 KABAM (Kingman Area Books Are Magic) Festival Day. The proclamation recognized literacy as the foundation of the economic, educational and cultural well being of a community. Councilwoman Robin Gordon (front, right) and Kingman Unified School District Superintendent Roger Jacks were present for the event, as was Mrs. Victory's kindergarten class.

· Shall we move the Fest! to the fall? (Robert thinks so, perhaps in early October, i.e. 2nd weekend, which would make the next Fest! October 10, 2009; if we stay in the spring, how about the 3rd weekend again, which would be May 16th?)
· Bylaws for KABAM? (Robert is willing to work on a draft of these, but feels it would be good to spell out a few things in writing that can be referred to each year, i.e. the fact the KABAM operates under the auspices of the Mohave Library Alliance; the budget for featured authors must be in-place at least 2 months prior to the festival or else we cancel with authors; what different positions exist on the Steering Committee and how people are selected for them; how dates for the Fest! are selected; the fact that schools who want featured authors to visit their schools required demonstrated commitment to the Fest! by attending meetings; how decisions are made, etc.)
